Tribe Closes Beach Access in Olympic Park

A dispute has prompted the Quileute Tribe to close access to the Second Beach Trail in Olympic National Park.
Park officials didn't say exactly what the dispute was that led to closure of the trailhead and the trail's parking lot, both of which are located on the tribe's reservation on the Pacific Coast. But without access to the Second Beach Trail, park officials say they had no choice but to close it, too.
For many years the tribe has allowed public access across its reservation to Second Beach.
"Regrettably, the tribal council has chosen to close access across their lands," says Bill Laitner, Olympic's superintendent. "We are working to continue discussions and are hopeful that visitors will once again have access to Second Beach."
Not affected by the closure is the park's Third Beach Trail, also near LaPush.
