Red Eagle Fire Raging Over More than 22,000 Acres

Share

Well, there are more than 200 firefighters on the scene in Glacier National Park trying to slow the Red Eagle Fire, which has burned across more than 22,000 acres since being spotted Friday afternoon.
Along with the residents of St. Mary's being asked to evacuate the town that marks the eastern gateway to Glacier, park officials have closed the Cut Bank Creek Campground. Highway 89 south of Babb, Montana, and north of Browning, Montana, also has been closed, and the Going-to-the-Sun Road is open only from the park's West Glacier entrance to the Rising Sun Campground.
The fire is burning in a variety of vegetation ranging from sub-alpine fir and mixed conifer to Douglas Fir, shrubs and grass. Steep, rugged landscape in some areas has been hampering some of the firefighting efforts.
The forecast is not too promising, with winds of 25 miles per hour and falling humidity.
