Montana Governor Takes Coal Mine Fight to Canada

Unsatisfied with the response he was getting from provincial officials in British Columbia over a coal mine proposed in the headwaters of the Flathead River, Montana's governor has taken his fight to Canada's Environmental Minister.
Governor Brian Schweitzer has requested that Minister John Baird have the proposed Cline mine reviewed under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.
"This is an amazing development," Bob Peart, a strategic adviser to the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Committee, told the Globe and Mail.
"It's never happened before in Canadian history that a foreign state has demanded an assessment under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. I think this just shows you how seriously the U.S. is taking this threat. Montana's governor is reaching out and saying the Flathead is really, really serious business."
