I must admit, it's hard to think of a maximum security prison as a unit of the national park system, but so it goes. Alcatraz Island is actually attached to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It's in the news these days because of a new audio tour.
While some audio tours across the park system seemingly are designed to replace interpretive rangers, this one isn't -- unless those rangers were guards or inmates of the Rock at one point of their lives. That's because this new audio tour contains interviews with some of the prison's inmates as well as some of the guards.
Learn more about these new tours at this site.
