Although it's spring, Norris Campground remains inundated with snow, as this picture from Tuesday shows. NPS photo by Jim Peaco.

When it snows in the Rockies, it really snows. The most snow in a decade this past winter has resulted in too much snow to open the Norris Campground in Yellowstone National Park on schedule.

While the Norris Campground had been scheduled to open this Friday, May 16, it's currently covered by as much as two feet of snow. More realistically, park officials say they might be able to open the entire campground for business by the Memorial Day weekend. Between this weekend and the end of the month park officials will open individual sites at Norris as the snow retreats.

Updates on the status of the Norris Campground can be found at this site.

Frontcountry camping is currently available at Madison and Mammoth, and the Tower Fall Campground and the Fishing Bridge RV Park will open this Friday with staggered opening dates for the remaining campgrounds between the Friday of Memorial Day weekend and June 21. Reservations for the Madison Campground and Fishing Bridge RV Park can be made by calling 307-344-7311. Camping at Mammoth and Tower Fall is on a first-come.
