Dry conditions in the Southwest have prompted Zion National Park officials to institute fire restrictions, including a ban on campfires and smoking on trails.
Park officials feel that the risk to public safety and structures within Zion from a human-caused fire is great enough that these restrictions are necessary.
The restrictions now in place specifically prohibit campfires in campgrounds, picnic areas, or permanently improved places of habitation. However, stoves fueled by propane or petroleum are allowed, as are charcoal fires.
Smoking also is banned on all park trails, but is being allowed within an enclosed vehicle, developed recreation site, or designated smoking area.
The use of any kind of fireworks also is prohibited throughout the park.
Violation of these prohibited acts is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 and/or imprisonment for not more than twelve months, or both.

There is nothing new about this they always ban campfires in Zion usually May thru Oct. They also never allow fireworks in Zion. To me this is not news. Most parks in the Southwest have these bans this time of the year. Only a fool would light a campfire here in the Southwest during the summer. Oh I forgot there are a lot of fools out there who don't understand that when its dry you shouldn't have a campfire.
