Attend the Native America art auction at Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site and you might find yourself a beautiful Navajo rug. NPS photo of Ganado design rug by Ian Pioche.
Native American art is treasured by many for its beauty and, in many cases, ties to the landscape. On May 9 if you find yourself in eastern Arizona you'll have an opportunity to bid on some of this artwork.
Sponsored by the Friends of Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site, in partnership with the National Park Service, the May auction is one of two scheduled for this year at the trading post. The other will be held September 19.
The auctions will include contemporary and antique Navajo textiles, Pueblo Katsina dolls, pottery, paintings, carvings and baskets from many tribes. Preview for each auction is from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. with both auctions beginning at noon. Auction artwork will be available in everyone's price range from just $20 to well over $4,000.
In addition to the auction, arts, crafts, and food vendors will be available during the day and the trading post store will be open for your enjoyment.
Each event is held outdoors in a big tent at the National Historic Site in Ganado, Arizona.
Artists may register their work the week of each auction: for the May 9 auction (May 4 - 8); for the September 19 auction (September 14 - September 18). Only authentically handmade Native American art objects will be accepted in the auction and at the vendor tables.
