Search Under Way Friday Afternoon For Woman Who Jumped or Fell Into Little River in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

A search was under way Friday afternoon for a woman who either jumped or fell into the Little River in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The search was along the river from the Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area towards Townsend.

Complicating the search was the fact that the Little River was at flood stage, with swift currents and murky waters, the park reported.

Rangers were moving along the river banks downstream from the point were the unidentified woman entered the water while others are searching upstream from "The Sinks." A team was also set up stationary just upstream from The Sinks to intercept the victim if she was swept down that far. The Sinks is about 1.5 to 2 miles below Metcalf Bottoms.

The Little River Road was closed between the park's Townsend Entrance and the Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area as the road was blocked by emergency response vehicles.
