Find Your Spot in the National Park System Via the National Park Foundation

Share

Now, it's generally not wise to suggest that you flee the Traveler for some other website, but you've got to check out this site just launched by the National Park Foundation. (Just promise that you'll come right back, OK?!)

The foundation's new site -- http://thisisyourland.nationalparks.org -- is aimed with you -- the user of the parks -- in mind. On this site, which debuted just this week, you can explore the 391 parks, leave your thoughts about a specific park, or map directions to get to the park of your dreams. The tags you leave can then be linked to various social media sites for sharing.

The site's roll-out was strategically planned to coincide with The National Parks: America's Best Idea, and why not? Has there ever been as much buzz about the national parks as there has been this week courtesy of this 12-hour documentary from Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan?

The site actually is just one component of a media launch the National Park Foundation hopes will bring more Americans in touch with the national parks. The scope of work involves a comprehensive marketing communications plan, including digital, broadcast and print. The assignment represents the most significant out-bound marketing campaign that the National Park Foundation has ever done.

“There’s never been a better time for Americans to celebrate what is ours together," says Jamie Patten, the foundation's senior vice president for communications. "No matter what you believe in or who you are - the parks are where we can find common ground.”

The media campaign was designed by Modernista!, the foundation's new agency of record, and the design and programming support for the web portal was provided by FL-2 in Denver.

One problem for some reason I get a message that I need to upgrade to explorer 7, when I use explorer 8. I don't think this site was tested very well.

It appears to work fine in firefox 3.5.2.
On my machine it works ok (albeit slow page loads!) in ie7, too.

I see a lot of java in the page source and it uses asp, but I don't see flash, so your solution isn't going to be simply updating your flash plugin.
