Acadia National Park Reopens East Face Trail After Three Years of Repairs

After three years the East Face Trail that goes up Champlain Mountain at Acadia National Park has been reopened. An earthquake three years ago forced closure of the trail by spawning rock slides across portions of the trail. This photo was taken shortly after that earthquake. NPS photo.

It took three years, but crews at Acadia National Park finally have completed repairs to earthquake damage on the East Face Trail that runs up Champlain Mountain.

The trail, renamed the Orange and Black Path, recently reopened. It was closed back in October 2006 when an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 rumbled the park's granite underpinnings and caused a rock slide that closed sections of the trail.

The name change derives from a decision by the park staff to use some of Acadia's historical trail names.
