Pounding surf to wake you, and to help you fall asleep. A quick dash into the breakers to wash the sleep from your system. Fresh sea breezes. What more do you need to consider before renting a cabin on Cape Lookout National Seashore for a vacation this coming year?

Beginning January 11 you'll be able to reserve one of the cabins on South Core Banks and North Core Banks by calling the national seashore. Both the Great Island Cabins on South Core Banks and the Long Point cabins on North Core Banks will open for the "summer" season on March 26. Last year's rental rates ran from $92 up to $168, depending on the size of the cabin and whether you were renting for the spring, summer, or fall seasons.

There are 21 Great Island Cabins that are decidedly rustic cabins and which vary in age and condition. They sleep anywhere from four to 12 people in bunk-bed style. Some cabins have screened porches. Most are wired for generator use. Visitors supply their own generator. Each cabin has a hot water heater, table, chairs, and a kitchen with cabinets, propane oven/stove combination and a private bath. Visitors need to provide their own linens, bedding and cookware.

The 20 Long Point cabins can sleep six, also in bunk-bed style. Each unit has a hot water heater, individual propane heating system, lighting fixtures, a combination sleeping-eating area with ceiling fans, table, chairs, a kitchen with cabinets, oven/stove combination and a private bath. Each unit is approximately 500 square feet. Visitors need to provide their own linens, bedding and cookware. Duplex cabins share porches and decks.

You can make reservations for the Great Island cabins by calling (252) 728-0942, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, beginning on Monday, January 11. The Great Island cabins will operate until December 3, 2010.

Reservations for the Long Point cabins can be made through the National Park Service by calling (252) 728-0958, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, also beginning on Monday, January 11. The Long Point cabins will operate until Sunday, November 28, 2010.

After placing your reservation, the seashore will send you a confirmation letter.
