New Website Makes It Easy To Follow and Explore National Trails System

Share

Check out The Partnership for the National Trails System. It's a great website for exploring the national trails that run across the country.

With National Trails Day coming up June 5, there's a great website that can help you explore the National Trails System and plan your next hike.

The Partnership for the National Trails System is a collaboration with federal land management agencies that have trails on their landscapes. Those involved with the partnership work to secure both public and private funds to help maintain the trails, and to educate the general public about the system and what it offers.

The site, http://www.pnts.org/, provides an overview of the national trails, lets you know about events taking place, and offers some in-depth information on both National Recreational Trails as well as National Scenic and Historic trails. An interactive map lets you find where the National Scenic and Historic trails run, and provides some basic information on the trails.

For instance, the Florida National Scenic Trail runs some 1,500 miles across the state of Florida, connecting Pensicola in the north to Everglades National Park in the south. Additionally, "this hiking trail is the lowest elevation trail in the system and passes through diverse National Forests, swamps, and cultural homelands of the Seminole Indians." There's also a link to the Florida Trail Association, which maintains this scenic trail. On that site you can find more specific details on hiking the Florida National Scenic Trail.

The page on the National Recreation Trails, meanwhile, contains an online database with information on 1,079 National Recreation Trails in all 50 states.

There's a lot of information on this site when it comes to our national trails. It's a great place to do research for your next hike.
