It really is hard to beat sleeping out under the stars in a national park. And recent improvements to the campground at Mesa Verde National Park make that activity even more comfortable.
The park's 435-site Morefield Campground is 4 miles inside the park's entrance. It's not exactly Spartan, either, as there are hot-water showers, coin-operated laundry, a camp store and cafe, and Wi-Fi access at the store. And for those who enjoy camping but aren't exactly comfortable in a small tent, park concessionaire ARAMARK offers what it calls "Base Camping" -- you can sleep in a 10-foot-by-12-foot canvass tent complete with carpeted floor, two cots, and lantern for lighting.
What you likely won't notice while staying in the campground, but which you'll undoubtedly benefit from, are the renovations the Park Service and ARAMARK put into the campground's water system last year. They overhauled the system and installed 23 meters throughout the campground, upgrades that saved 1.3 million gallons of water last year.
Morefield Campground is the entry point for three of the park’s five hiking trails. Campers can explore Morefield or Chapin Mesa Trailheads that provide incredible access to miles of trails for hikers of every skill level.
Sites in the campground start at $20 per campsite, per night plus tax. The Base Camping sites range from $39-$49 per night. For more information, and to reserve a site, visit this site.
