Search Under Way for Missing Angler In Glacier National Park

A search continued Wednesday afternoon for a 30-year-old Montana man who failed to return from a fishing trip in Glacier National Park.

Michael William Sloan, from nearby Hungry Horse, planned to fish the Upper McDonald Creek area at the north end of Lake McDonald on Tuesday, park officials said. When Mr. Sloan did not show up for work later that day, he was reported missing.

Park rangers found the man's vehicle by the bridge over Upper McDonald Creek about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, the park reported. Before ending their search for the night, rangers searched the banks of Upper McDonald Creek by ground and the shoreline of the north end of Lake McDonald, and the confluence of the lake and creek by boat, according to a park release.

The Upper McDonald Creek area is known to have strong down currents and extremely cold water temperatures.

The National Park Service resumed the search Wednesday morning with the assistance of Flathead County Search and Rescue, North Valley Search and Rescue, Flathead County Dive Team, and a contracted helicopter from Minuteman Aviation.

Searchers also were using rescue dogs along the shoreline. Sonar and dive teams planned to search the water.
