Time To Consider That Backcountry Ski Trek in Sequoia National Park

With the High Sierra already having been blessed with some heavy snows, it's not too early to think about heading to the Pear Lake Hut in Sequoia National Park for a wintry adventure.

Of course, this is not something you decide to do at the last minute. Here, via the Sequoia Natural History Association, which manages the backcountry hut, are the guidelines:

The trip to the hut is for experienced backcountry skiers under potentially dangerous, winter conditions. For your safety, it is advised that you review the ski checklist provided and be prepared for your trip.

This historic cabin is available to the public from December 17, 2010 to April 24, 2011. The advanced level ski/snowshoe trail offers a chance to explore the beautiful wilderness of the Sierra Nevada mountains during the winter months with a cozy cabin waiting for you at the end of your day. Begin your trip at 7,200 feet at Wolverton and ascend a steep six miles east to the Pear Lake area of 9,200 feet. The hut sleeps ten people and offers many amenities to lighten your load.

Advanced reservations are required. Due to limited space and high demand, a preferred lottery will be held Nov. 1, 2010 for SNHA members. After, availability is on a first-come, first-served basis. Commercial Operators such as tour companies and guide services should not participate in the lottery. If you are a tour company, please contact SNHA at 559.565.4222 to schedule your reservation.

per night $38 SNHA member $30

Member discount for individual membership = self only

Member discount for family (or higher level) membership = good for up to 10 people
