Rockfall Blocks West Entrance To Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park crews were working to remove a large rock that had fallen onto Highway 140 and was blocking entrance to the park via that route.

The boulder, estimated at 10-15 feet in height and 6 feet by 4 feet wide, fell about 11 a.m. PDT Thursday. The location is about a half-mile east of Yosemite View Lodge in El Portal.

"Due to additional loose rocks, as well as the blocked road, Highway 140/El Portal Road will remain closed for at least 24-hours while Yosemite Road Crews assess the area of the rockfall and remove all obstructions and safety concerns from the roadway," said a park release sent Thursday afternoon "For current road information, please call 209-372-0200."

While this entrance to the park was temporarily closed, both Highways 120 and 41 into Yosemite remain open, the park noted.
