A heavy downpour Tuesday triggered some mud and rock slides along the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, trapping about 10 vehicles and requiring at least one visitor to be taken to a hospital.

After the slides the road was closed between Avalanche Creek and Logan Pass, according to a park release. The closure was expected to last at least through the night as crews worked to clean up the debris.

Word of several mud and rock slides along approximately 5 miles of the Sun Road above The Loop to an area near Triple Arches reached Glacier National Park Dispatch about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Park rangers, road contractors, and other Park Service employees responded to the incident. Two visitors sustained minor injuries and were attended to by park rangers, and a visitor with diabetic needs was transported to a medical facility by Three Rivers Ambulance.

Park officials say one of the vehicles trapped needed to be towed out of the area.
