All six Cape Cod National Seashore beaches were open on Labor Day despite the sightings of great white sharks in nearby waters.
Though some beaches managed by towns along the cape had been closed in recent days due to shark sightings, on the national seashore all six of their beaches were open with lifeguards posted, according to personnel at the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham.
Shark sightings in the cape's waters are fairly common in summer. Wildlife biologists speculate that the sharks are attracted by large numbers of grey seals that they prey on.
