Where Can You See Wildlife Right Now: Alligators And Crocs At Biscayne National Park

Fascinated by alligators and crocodiles? You can find both in either Biscayne or Everglades national parks, and at this time of year they're slightly easier to spot than during the summer months.

That's because in colder weather, these large cold-blooded reptiles spend more time on land basking in the sun to keep warm, according to Park Service wildlife biologists. Here are some simple pointers to help you distinguish the two species.

1. American alligators have broader U-shaped snouts while American crocodiles have narrow V-shaped snouts.

2. Gators tend to be very darkly colored (even appearing to be black) while crocs are usually a bit lighter, appearing more green than black.

3. Gators prefer freshwater while crocs are better adapted for saltwater, but both species can inhabit either.

Enjoy your sightings of these amazing creatures and consider reporting your sightings for a park ranger to document. Remember that these species are protected by federal law, so it is illegal to harass them in any way
