Get set for April 6th—Park Day for Civil War battlefields and historic sites. Started in 1996 by the Civil War Trust, Park Day is a nationwide event during which Civil War history lovers contribute a day of volunteer work to help maintain the war's historic sites.

The Trust says volunteer projects are determined by each individual battlefield or site and "can range from raking leaves to hauling trash to painting signs or trail building." This year marks the 17th annual Park Day. Want to get involved? In other Civil War Trust news, the group was recently able to celebrate a victory in Franklin, Tennessee. Fundraising to save five parcels of land on Franklin’s “ground zero” was completed in February. “Ten years ago, we named this one of the most endangered battlefields in America, and demanded that Franklin stop paving over its history,” said Jim Lighthizer, President of the Civil War Trust. By the Sesquicentennial of the Battle of Franklin in November of 2014, the Carter Cotton Gin Park will be open to the public.

One of the next campaigns the Trust is tackling is acquiring a total of 69 acres in three key Civil War battlefields in Richmond, Virginia: Glendale, Malvern Hill, and First Deep Bottom. All three battlefields saw significant action during the Civil War and these 69 acres will be contributing to more than 2,300 acres of hallowed ground previously saved by the trust.
