The calendar may show it's spring, but you wouldn't know it by conditions across much of the country this week. Among the areas where winter just won't let go is Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where a recent snowstorm will delay the planned spring opening of the road to Clingmans Dome.
Higher elevation sections of the park, including Clingmans Dome, received over 18 inches of snow this week. The road was slated to open for the season on Friday, March 29th, but due to this late season storm, that road now likely won’t open until early next week.
A park spokesperson said park road crews are currently continuing efforts to open Newfound Gap Road from Sugarlands Visitor Center to Newfound Gap, which has also been closed temporarily due to snow and ice.
For updated information about road closures, you can call the park's Road and Weather Information Line at 865-436-1200 or check the park website.
