While Campers Slept, Lanterns Set Fire To Oyster Bay Chickee At Everglades National Park
Despite being surrounded by water, the Oyster Bay Chickee at Everglades National Park was destroyed when lanterns left burning by campers while they slept set the structure on fire.
The Chickee, a sleeping area raised above Florida Bay in the park's Flamingo area, is primarily made from wood and plastic decking.
Plans for repair are underway, and the public will be notified when it is once again open for visitor enjoyment.
No immediate decision was made on whether the campers, none of whom received serious injuries, would be billed for the repairs.
