151st Anniversary Of Battle Of Fredericksburg To Be Marked With Special Events

With the 151st anniversary of the Battle of Fredericksburg being marked this month, the staff at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park has lined up some special events.

* Friday, December 13: Cannon Dedication Ceremony from 10:50 a.m. to 12 p.m. This program will dedicate replica cannon at the position of Confederate Major John Pelham. The event will be held at the intersection of Virgina Route 2 and Benchmark Road, 4 miles south of Fredericksburg. Ceremony includes a cannon firing demonstration. Sponsored by the Central Virginia Battlefield Trust.

* Saturday, December 14 -- A living history program will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Riverfront Park on Sofia Street in downtown Fredericksburg. The program will include rifle firing demonstrations at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. The participants will be depicting Federal soldiers, Confederate soldiers, and Civil War-era civilians. Sponsored by 28th Massachusetts and 47th Virginia.

* Sunday, December 15 -- The Irish Brigade Walking Tour will be held from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. It will start at the Fredericksburg City Dock located on the south end of Sophia Street and will conclude at 2 p.m. at the Kirkland Memorial along Sunken Road. Park historian Frank O’Reilly will be accompanied by living historians of the 28th Massachusetts. Sponsoredby 28th Massachusetts, Company B.

* Sunday, December 15 -- The Battle of Fredericksburg Annual Commemorative Event will be held at 2 p.m. at the Kirkland Memorial, adjacent to the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center, 1013 Lafayette Blvd, in Fredericksburg.

Matthew J. Kelly, a member of the Fredericksburg City Council and a member of the 28th Massachusetts, Company B, living history unit, will be the featured speaker. The ceremony will include color guards, living history soldiers, the laying of wreaths and the playing of Taps. Sponsored by the National Park Service.
