A search is ongoing for a hiker overdue in the backcountry of Olympic National Park in Washington state.
Kelly Hall, a 64-year-old Bainbridge Island man, was due to exit the park's backcountry last Thursday, according to a park release. He had embarked on a six-day, 39-mile hike on August 30 from the northeast corner of the park on the Obstruction Point Trail. Hall was reported overdue by family members after failing to come out at the U.S. Forest Service Slab Camp Trailhead as planned.
His planned itinerary was to hike through Grand Valley to Grand Pass, then continue over Cameron Pass, through Dose Meadows to Gray Wolf Pass and follow the Gray Wolf Trail into the Olympic National Forest Buckhorn Wilderness, the park reported.
'We ask anyone who may have seen Mr. Hall in recent days to please call the park immediately at 360-565-3120,' said Olympic National Park Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum. 'Information from other hikers is often extremely valuable during searches.'
There were seven National Park Service employees in the field, walking trails and searching areas along Hall's intended route. Three volunteer members of Olympic Mountain Rescue joined the search Saturday afternoon and four volunteers from Clallam County Search and Rescue were expected to join the effort later in the day.
