For a little change of pace in Yellowstone National Park, spend a time this Sunday looking up into the sky.
That's where migrating hawks are likely to be, as the time of year has arrived when hawks pass over the park on their southern migration. You can look for these raptors with Ranger Katy Duffy, who will not only point out the different species, but discuss their ecology and their migration strategies.
Ranger Duffy will start her program at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Fishing Bridge Visitor Center with a 45-minute presentation involving the mounted raptors on display there. Afterwards, participants may travel to the park’s famed Hayden Valley to observe and learn about the raptors that flow through Yellowstone each fall.
For the field portion of the tour, visitors are invited to meet at 11 a.m. at the turnout 6.6 miles south of Canyon Junction and 9 miles north of Fishing Bridge Junction. Each end of this turnout will have a sandwich board indicating the program location and a uniformed ranger with a spotting scope will be on scene. Participants are encouraged to bring a lawn chair for comfortable raptor viewing.
Observation of raptors will occur from 11 a.m. through 2 p.m. Both programs are free and open to the public.
