Tidal Reservoir Inlet Bridge To Close For Repairs

The Tidal Reservoir Inlet Bridge in Washington, D.C., will be closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists from Friday at 6:30 p.m. until Monday at 5:30 a.m. to allow for the replacement of the bridge’s concrete deck.

The bridge crosses the Tidal Basin west of the Jefferson Memorial, connecting East Potomac Park and West Potomac Park along Ohio Drive SW.

In the days leading up to the closure, motorists may find periodic alternating lane closures as the deck is prepared for replacement; flaggers will be on hand to direct traffic during this prep work. Final project completion is expected by the end of August.

The Tidal Reservoir Inlet Bridge was completed in 1909 and originally designed in the neoclassical Style with ornate details such as gargoyles and classical balustrades. The bridge was built to blend in with park surroundings while remaining functional. It was one of the first bridges to include a roadway when automobile traffic was only first beginning to appear in the nation’s capital.

The bridge falls under the auspices of the National Park Service, as it is within the National Mall and Memorial Parks.
