A new ramp, 32, will provide beach access at Cape Hatteras National Seashore beginning Sept 4/NPS

More hiking, additional parking, and a new ramp down to the beach are opening this week at Cape Hatteras National Seashore on North Carolina's Outer Banks.

On Friday the additions, located south of the village of Salvo and north of the village of Avon, will open.

“We made the opening of the new ORV beach access Ramp 32 and the nearby newly constructed parking lot and foot path, named 'Little Kinnakeet Beach Trail,' a priority so we could offer these new access areas to beachgoers in time for the Labor Day weekend,” said Outer Banks Group Superintendent David Hallac.

The opening also coincides with the beginning of the national seashore’s fall fishing season.

The paved parking area to the south of Ramp 32 provides additional pedestrian access to Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Ramp 32 is the second of several such beach access projects planned for the Seashore’s future.

The opening of Ramp 32 and the new beach trail marks the second time in one year the park has expedited construction to increase the number of facilities for improved access to the national seashore's beaches.

It was slightly more than a year ago, on September 11, 2014, that the new Ramp 25 opened with a handicap accessible boardwalk.

Planning for this project was completed in an Environmental Assessment in 2012 that gave consideration to new parking areas, paved and two unpaved roads, ORV ramps, foot paths, ADA accessible boardwalks, and the elevation of an existing flood-prone road section.

With the construction and completion of the new Ramp 32 and nearby beach trail, more immediate vehicle and pedestrian access to the Seashore’s beautiful beaches are available for visitors to explore and enjoy a diversity of the many recreational opportunities that Cape Hatteras National Seashore has to offer to all.
