Though firefighters were making some progress against the nearly 100,000-acre Rough Fire in California, the blaze was bearing down on Kings Canyon National Park, leading to a shutdown of all park campgrounds and a warning to remaining visitors, area residents, and employees in and near Grant Grove that they might need to evacuate.

"Currently, there is no immediate threat to Grant Grove, however with the recent fire behavior that has been observed over the past several days, the park management in cooperation with the Rough Fire Incident Management Team believes that the fire could make significant movement in that direction in the near future," read a release issued Tuesday night.

The fire was sparked by lightning on July 31 and has been burning through timber, chaparral, and tall grass. Nearly 2,000 firefighters battling the flames have been confronted by hot, dry weather as they try to get an upper hand on the blaze, which was only 31 percent contained by Tuesday night.

Access to Cedar Grove in the park had been shut off last month.
