With the bears apparently sated, the folks at Glacier National Park have reopened the St. Mary Campground on the east side of the park.
The campground had been temporarily closed due to bears drawn to an exceptionally abundant crop of a variety of berries located in the campground. While the bears seem to have headed elsewhere for nourishment, campers and visitors to the area are reminded to follow bear-safety protocols at all times.
The St. Mary Campground is currently in "primitive" status. There is no water available; campers are advised to bring their own.
Campers are reminded to keep campground and developed areas clean and free of food and trash. Regulations require that all edibles, food containers, and cookware be stored in a hard-sided vehicle or food locker when not in use, day or night. Visitors are required to place all trash in bear-proof containers. Visitors should report all bear sightings to a park ranger as soon as possible.
