Storms that delivered more than a foot of rain to parts of Shenandoah National Park in Virginia have led to damage that is limiting parking at the Whiteoak parking lot, according to park officials.
Nearly 16 inches of rain in the past week caused significant run-off in and around drainage areas impacting the bridge to the upper Whiteoak parking lot. Until the water recedes, the park will not be able to assess the bridge for damage.
As a result, Shenandoah officials have closed the bridge to vehicle traffic. Pedestrian traffic is still permitted. The lower Whiteoak and Cedar Run trails can still be accessed by foot from the lower parking area; however, space is very limited and there is currently no additional parking. Parking along Berry Hollow road (Route 600) is not allowed.
This closure is in effect until further notice and only affects the Whiteoak Canyon parking lot (off Berry Hollow road/Route 600). The Whiteoak and Cedar Run trails can also be accessed by their respective trail-heads on Skyline Drive at mile 43 (Whiteoak) and mile 45.5 (Cedar Run).
