Endangered Grizzlies Of North Cascades Featured In Short Film

Share

How much does a grizzly bear weigh when it’s born? How many used to live in the contiguous 48 states? What is a bear’s most common food?

Wanted: Grizzly Bears?, an educational short film, answers these questions, captures the beauty of grizzlies, and delves into people’s views of these natives to the North Cascades of Washington.

“We interviewed people from all walks of life for this film short. There are a lot of perceptions of grizzly bears out there and they all deserve to be heard,” ecologist and filmmaker Chris Morgan, who narrates and stars in the movie, said in a release. “My hope is that the film will trigger curiosity and perhaps help people learn more about these fascinating mammals that are part of the Washington state landscape.”

Morgan has studied grizzlies for 25 years and has hosted TV productions for PBS, National Geographic Television, BBC and Discovery Channel.

“What started as fear ended up as a deep respect for an animal that fascinates me,” Morgan says in the film.

With fewer than 20 grizzlies remaining in North Cascades National Park and the surrounding area, Morgan notes that the National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and other agencies have begun a process to figure out how to recover the grizzly population.

“Given the low number of grizzly bears, very slow reproductive rate and other recovery constraints, the (North Cascades Ecosystem) grizzly bear population is the most at-risk grizzly bear population in the United States today,” notes a February newsletter about the restoration plan.
