Extended Camping Season, Better Boardwalk Coming To Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Cape Hatteras National Seashore will have a longer camping season this year/NPS

Visitors to North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras National Seashore this year can take advantage of a longer camping season and improvements at the Ocracoke Day Use Area.

All four campgrounds – Oregon Inlet, Cape Point, Frisco, and Ocracoke – will be open April 15 to Nov. 28. In addition, Cape Point will join its neighbors in allowing reservations for the first time by calling 1-877-444-6777 or going to www.recreation.gov. Group camping is only available at Oregon Inlet, where the group site accommodates 7-30 people.

All Cape Hatteras campgrounds accommodate tents, trailers, and motor homes up to 35 feet. No utility hookups are available. Camping is only permitted in designated campgrounds, and pets must be on a leash not exceeding 6 feet at all times.

Those who get to Ocracoke Island at the southern end of the Seashore will see improvements to the Ocracoke Day Use Area. The project includes installing a sidewalk along the south edge of the parking lot, installing an ADA-accessible boardwalk with pre-cast concrete decking and aluminum handrails, and providing a new ocean viewing platform near the end of the boardwalk.

Work is scheduled to begin March 28 and be completed by Memorial Day. During construction, visitors will have limited access to the comfort station and shower facilities. A marked foot trail from the comfort station will lead to the beach.

Any addition to camping, public access to the Cape Hatteras and Bodie Island lighthouses will open April 15.
