Bears in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia are getting bold, travelers, and park officials have had to close some trails because of it.
The other day park staff put temporary trail closures in place for the Big Run Portal Trail and the Big Run Loop in the South District due to bear activity. The Big Run Loop Trail was closed at Big Run Overlook and at the intersection with Rockytop off of the A.T. between mile 82 and 83. The Big Run Portal Trail was closed at the Patterson Ridge Trail intersection.
According to some park visitors, there have been reports of black bears bluff-charging hikers. Others say shouting and loud noises aren't fazing them, either. Sounds like carrying bear spray is your best defense.

We saw loads of bears on our two week stay from May 15th to Memorial Day. My friend was even charged once when he didn't notice the Cubs in a tree behind him!
