Human remains found below the South Rim at Grand Canyon National Park are believed to be those of a young Louisiana woman missing since April, park officials said Wednesday.
Diana Zacarias, 22, of Natchitoches, Louoisiana, was reported missing by her family on April 3. At the time, her family said she had arrived on the South Rim via the Arizona Shuttle on April 2 and was dropped off at the Maswick Lodge. She is believed to have visited Yaki Point and Lookout Studio.
On Saturday rangers doing scheduled training found the remains of a female below Pima Point, which is near Hermit's Rest on the South Rim.
"Based on evidence found at the scene, the body is believed to be that of missing 22-year-old Diana Zacarias," a park release said Wednesday.
The remains have been transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner for positive identification. An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner. No additional information is available at this time.
