Fall foliage will be the star of 10 excursions in October at Steamtown National Historic Site/NPS

For leaf peepers and train lovers near Scranton, Pennsylvania, Steamtown National Historic Site will host 10 train excursions, all powered by historic diesel locomotives, through the countryside of the nearby Pocono Mountains in October. Ticket sales open Friday, September 23, by calling (570) 340-5204. Lines will be staffed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time. All trips begin and end at the Steamtown boarding platform.

October 1 and 29, Gouldsboro, depart at 11 a.m., return at 3 p.m.: Step back to the Roaring 1920s at the historic Gouldsboro train station. Tickets: $34 adults, $29 seniors, $22 children 6-15. Children to age 5 require a “no-charge” ticket.

October 2, 10, 15, and 22, Moscow, depart at 12:30 p.m., return at 3 p.m.: The Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society leases the former Moscow passenger station and freight house. Tickets: $24 adults, $22 seniors, $17 children 6-15. Children to age 5 require a “no-charge” ticket.

October 8, East Stroudsburg, depart at 9 a.m., return at 5 p.m.: In addition to the borough’s Fall Foliage Festival and Fireman’s Picnic, visit the East Stroudsburg Railroad Tower. Tickets: $54, adults, $49 seniors, $32 children 6-15. Children to age 5 require a “no-charge” ticket.

October 9, Tobyhanna Station, depart at 11 a.m., return at 3 p.m.: This excursion includes a walking tour to an ice house. Tickets: $34 adults, $29 seniors, $22 children 6-15. Children 5 and younger require a “no-charge” ticket.

October 16, Delaware Water Gap Station, depart at 9 a.m., return at 5 p.m.: Tour this historic town and enjoy fall activities. Tickets: $54 adults, $49 seniors, $32 children 6-15. Children to age 5 require a “no-charge” ticket.

October 23, Cresco, depart at 11:30 a.m., return at 4 p.m.: Enjoy a musical visit with live guitar music and light refreshments. The restored depot preserves aspects of life in the early days of the Poconos. A show of historic autos is also part of the visit, weather-permitting. Tickets: $34 adults, $29 seniors, $22 children 6-15. Children 5 and younger require a “no-charge” ticket.

The 30-minute Scranton Limited short train rides inside the park boundaries will operate on Fridays and Saturdays in September and October, then continue on Saturdays through November 19. The Nay Aug Limited short train rides will operate on Sundays through November 27. All short train rides depart from the Roundhouse boarding area at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. There is a $5 charge for this ride in addition to the daily entrance fee of $7 per person.
