The Going-to-the-Sun-Road in Glacier National Park in Montana is closed for the season from Avalanche on the west side to the Jackson Glacier overlook on the east side. A severe winter snowstorm followed by temperatures below freezing created unsafe traveling conditions along the alpine section of the Going-to-the-Sun Road, park officials said Wednesday.
The scheduled closure was Monday, October 17. Closures on the Going-to-the-Sun Road will drop to Lake McDonald Lodge on the west side, and the foot of St. Mary Lake on the east side when winter conditions set in.
Hikers and bikers can access the Going-to-the-Sun Road from either side of the park. Temporary restrictions are in place as road crew works to winterize the road. Visitors are cautioned to be prepared for limited services and winter-like conditions.
The Apgar Visitor Center is now open on weekends only from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The Apgar Backcountry Permit Office is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through October 31.
Boat inspections for boats launching on the west side of the park will be conducted at the Apgar Backcountry Office, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily through the end of October. Boat inspections for the east side of the park are by appointment only. Appointments are available by contacting the park at 406-888-7800 (press 5).
