Rangers at Great Smoky Mountains National Park worked deep into the night Monday to determine whether a single-engine plane had crashed somewhere in the middle of the park that straddles the Tennessee-North Carolina border.
Park officials said that shortly after 7:30 p.m. they received a report that a small plane might have gone down into the central portion of the park, which spans more than 520,000 acres. The plane had been reported missing south of the Sevierville (Tennessee) Airport.
Rangers were being aided by the Civil Air Patrol in the search for the plane, said a park release issued about midnight local time. No additional information was available.
