The Bodie Island Light will open for public climbing on April 20/NPS

Those looking for one of the best views of Cape Hatteras National Seashore on North Carolina's Outer Banks can mark April 20 on their calendar, for that's when the Bodie Island and Cape Hatteras lighthouses open for climbing.

David Hallac, superintendent of National Parks of Eastern North Carolina, invites the local Outer Banks community and park visitors to climb the lighthouses at no charge on opening day, April 20. Free tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis and can only be obtained in person, that day, on site.

During the climbing season, which runs through October 8, ticket sales at each location begin daily at 9 a.m. with the last tickets sold at 4:30 p.m. For more information on regular climbing ticket prices, rules, and safety information, visit this page.

Full Moon Tours of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will be offered on May 29, June 28, July 27, August 26, and September 24. Tickets for these climbs can be purchased at www.recreation.gov starting at 10 a.m. three days prior to each tour date.
