- 1/06/2009 8:41 pm - This Park Combines Scenery and History on a Desert Island : But going back to the original question, a "dry island' is one without a source of fresh water, and a "desert island" would be one without rainfall, I imagine. Thus, the right term would seem to be "deserted island!"
- 1/06/2009 7:47 pm - Pouring Sand Down a Rathole: The $100 Million National Visitor Center Fiasco : I couldn't help but notice in LBJ's remarks mention of the Capitol Visitor's Center. The final price tag on that fiasco? $621 million. Yet another lesson that it takes more than good intentions to ensure that public money is well spent.
- 12/10/2008 11:31 pm - World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument is Established by Presidential Proclamation : MRC - There actually is a prominent memorial to Japanese internment already... the cumbersomely named National Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism During World War II is located just off the National Mall in Washington. It, along with other prominent memorials such as the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial and the George ...
- 12/10/2008 10:18 pm - National Park Service Draws Criticism for Winter-Use Plan for Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks : Kurt - Yes, I did confuse Judges Sullivan and Brimmer in my original post - I of course meant Judge Brimmer when I referred to Judge Sullivan. I blame it on too many judges and posting too late at night! As to the point about the agency's ability to move ...
- 12/09/2008 8:53 pm - National Park Service Draws Criticism for Winter-Use Plan for Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks : The timeline provided by the conservation groups seems pretty disingenuous. Normally in a timeline you place events in the order that they occurred - only makes sense, right? In this case, though, they put the "Bush Administration published a rule authorizing up to 720 snowmobiles a day", which occurred today ...
- 12/05/2008 7:09 am - Climbing is Capped at Mount McKinley and Climbers are Left to Wonder What’s Next : It seems self-evident that some sort of limit is the right way to go. After all, the capacity of Mt. McKinley is not infinite - if you think 1,500 is too low, could the mountain handle 3,000 climbers? 6,000? The real question is how should the National Park Service allocate ...
- 12/05/2008 7:04 am - Hikers, Bikers and National Parks : I've noticed an interested connection between several Traveler articles recently, including this one, the article on China's "First" National Park, and the article on "Did the NPS Ever Manage this National Monument". It seems that many National Park issues are arising from the fact that the "Big Four" Federal Land ...
- 12/03/2008 6:31 am - China Moves to Designate its First National Park : If this is truly the "first" National Park - it sounds like this really raises the question of what is a National Park. It sounds like China is interpreting a "National Park" to be a place that is oriented towards visitation in a way that does not necessarily apply to ...
- 11/19/2008 9:06 pm - Updated: Dueling Judges Push Yellowstone National Park Snowmobile Limit Back to 720 Per Day : Jim - My understanding is that the Park Service isn't stopping moving towards the 318 Rule - its just no longer scrambling to get that Rule in place before December. It was probably completely unrealistic to pull that off anyways, but I think that's what they were trying in light ...
- 11/19/2008 6:38 am - Updated: Dueling Judges Push Yellowstone National Park Snowmobile Limit Back to 720 Per Day : From reading Judge Brimmer's opinion, it is clear that he was placing a higher value on providing certainty on short-term snowmobile policy to Park users and the surrounding Park communities, rather than on getting the right long-term policy in place for the immediate winter season. Furthermore, the opinion seems to ...
