Researchers at Great Smoky Mountains National Park are looking for a few good volunteers for a one-day project at the park on October 31, 2009. If you'd like to learn some new skills and are up to several miles of hiking, here are the details.

Many of the visitors to Pinnacles National Monument in California hope for a glimpse of a rare California Condor in the wild. Thanks to the park's Artist in Residence program, they can also enjoy a beautiful stained glass depiction of a condor in flight.

Volunteer cleanup days will be held in a number of parks this year, but one of the most ambitious is scheduled for five days next week at Yosemite National Park. "Yosemite Facelift" will be held September 23-27, and anyone who participates is eligible for some "thank you" perks in addition to the satisfaction of a job well done.

The vast sea of grass called the prairie is now just a memory in most of North America, but a few protected and restored remnants still remain. If you'd like to help with prairie restoration projects, several NPS areas are looking for volunteers during the next several weeks.

Have you wanted a chance to try your hand—literally—at archeology? If so, the staff at Manzanar National Historic Site in California may have just the deal for you. They're looking for a few good men and women willing to volunteer on projects this summer in the park.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is inviting high school-aged students, their families, and the general public to join scientists and educators in collecting scientific data during field activities in the park, July 13-15, 2009.

The Friends of the Smokies created their Trails Forever program to help with high-priority trails projects at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Trails Forever endowment goal is a hefty $4 million. Trails Forever is currently seeking volunteers to help with two major trail projects in the park.

The Unilever-sponsored National Parks America Tour, a volunteer program with over 25 scheduled stops in the national parks this year, has organized a beach cleanup at Padre Island National Seashore for Saturday, October 18. The huge volume of storm debris left by last month’s Hurricane Ike has been very difficult to deal with and continues to wash ashore daily.

You’ll love what they see at the national park entrance gates on Saturday, September 27. It’s the 15th annual National Public Lands Day, and all parks will be waiving their admission fees. It’d be nice if you volunteered to help with the site restoration and cleanup efforts planned for that day.
