Washington State Man Dies At Glacier National Park, Possibly From Fall Off Highline Trail

Share

Glacier National Park authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the death of a 64-year-old Washington state man who might have slipped in snow along the Highline Trail and fallen to his death.

The incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near the Rim Rock area, which is roughly a mile west of Logan Pass along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. At approximately 3:40 p.m., park dispatch received a report from a park ranger requesting emergency medical assistance in that area.

The park ranger arrived at the scene and administered CPR and utilized an automated external defibrillator with the assistance of local bystanders. The man, whose name has not been released, was declared dead at the scene.

According to a park release, witnesses told rangers that the man apparently was hiking alone on the Highline Trail, which is closed due to snow danger. It is believed that the visitor slipped on snow and fell to his death, the release added.

All visitors are reminded that winter conditions exist in many locations in the high country, including the Logan Pass area. Please exercise caution when walking on snow and be alert of possible collapsible snow, steep slide areas, and changing weather conditions.

My condolences to his family. Most years, even though the road has been opened, it doesn't mean that all the trails are open. The Highline Trail in particular has a LOT of snow still on it, even into July! Although the trail was closed, it doesn't sound like he was the only one on it if bystanders assisted the park ranger at the scene.
