Politics Raise A Potential Roadblock to Creation Of A "Maine Woods National Park and Preserve"

Jun 30th - 12:38pm | Reality Experim...

Mr. KellettSo much imagery is also a large part of debate.  It always has been but the amount of reality or truth as a base of the issues sure has to be at an all time low, I believe.  The use of the "environment" as a straw man is not arguable.

Jun 29th - 11:36am | Reality Experim...

Mr. Kellett,Just wondering if you might be stuck in the 60's (fun at the time) mentality.  It could be referred to as arrested development in some circles but I know it's more difficult to grow when a career is so profitable with such a great straw man as the environment.

Jun 29th - 11:06am | Michael Kellett

Dear Reality Experimentor,

Jun 29th - 10:55am | It's early (am)

I believe you are right, Mr. Saunders.  At least about the 50% that pay 100% of the taxes.  Should be a goal for the other half to get themselves in a position where they can have some skin in the game.  Might be a lot learned in the struggle:).

Jun 28th - 18:52pm | Ron Saunders

Do not have time to read all of this . But my guess is that people are waking up and realizing that National Parks now result in: (A) The Federal Government taking control of properties (B)  Select Special Interest Groups taking control of the Federal Government, thus taking control of the properties (C) The People losing control of the properties

I don't believe your description of park rangers as being "fascist" is either fair or justified. The dig at the NRA also strange-- I belong to the NRA and love animals, nature and the Nat Parks as much as anyone.Do you belong to PETA???

Jun 29th - 09:01am | Anonymous

Let's pray some fascist park ranger who just renewed his NRA Membership doesn't get trigger happy. There is a terrible misconception about those who wear the Green & Grey uniform today of the NPS: The mistaken belief is that NPS Management truly cares about protecting the wildlife from the visitor; tragically,

That Grand Teton National Park Ranger Is Juan Ibanez

Jun 30th - 09:07am | Smoky Zeidel

What a beautiful tribute to rangers! I've had wonderful experiences, too, with rangers, over my 50+ years of camping in our National Parks. They do so much for so little financial gain. It takes a special person to become a ranger. They do it out of love for nature and for our parks. They do it because they can't NOT do it.

Bandelier National Monument Closed by Rapidly Spreading Wildfire

Boy, has Rush Limbaugh gotten into some heads or what.  Jim you have to be shaking your head about how far afield we've gone here.  It's been interesting  on many points, lol!I've, in the past, tried to find something constant and provable to the extreme and I've come to the end of that road finding but one constant.

Learn more about Climate Change Debate: http://www.rationalskepticism.org/pseudoscience/global-warming-science-denial-scepticism-t5955.html

Jun 30th - 00:54am | Does it matter?

ecbuck's initial point remains valid no matter which side of the climate debate you are on.  Bandelier has survived the last several million years of climate change, why would it not survive the next 50 years of climate change, regardless of the cause of that climate change?  Even if one accepts the generally scientifically held view of climate change

Jun 29th - 15:32pm | Rich S.

Fire up the grill, ec.  Since you've apparently had more than your fair share of red kool-aid, might I suggest a nice bottle of chilled strawberry Boone's Farm to go with that crow.

Jun 29th - 08:31am | ecbuck

"The bottom line is, you have dismissed science for the sake of a political agenda."

Jun 29th - 06:52am | It's early (am)

Rich S,"Let them eat crow!"   Not a very nice thing to say but I do have a twinge of deja vu. Ever since Clinton got elected and the course of things to follow with the acceptance of deception (lies) as long as you don't show (or feel) guilt.  Nixon's saving grace was that when he WAS guilty, he looked it.

Jun 29th - 00:10am | Rich S.

Oppenheimer had lot's of quotes.  I saw one in an article once and have been unable to find it since. It went something like this:  "You can never convince a man by using facts.  But, the science soon passes these people by, and they eventually just die off."

Jun 28th - 22:05pm | Keeper

Hey Jim, you should feel good that your topic spawned a subject of much larger significance and reader engagement.  You all have a worthy site here and will send support your way:).

Jun 28th - 19:25pm | ecbuck

True  Jim - but so ironic that Claudia's concerns are to protect the only human caused changes we can be sure about.

Jun 28th - 19:06pm | Jim Burnett

Thanks, Claudia, for a comment that is actually on the subject of the original story :-).

Jun 28th - 18:42pm | ecbuck

"(Hint: Rush Limbaugh is not a good source of scientific information)." Rush isn't my style but I haven't seen him make up data or actively suppress information from others. "Natural, non-anthropogenic causes have been taken into account and cannot adequately explain the current observations."

Jun 28th - 17:45pm | Claudia Chapman

Fragile petroglyphs and ancient kivas in Bandelier are indeed in danger, as is the museum and visitor center. The land itself will recover eventually, but the sacred sites and history might not. This would be an unspeakable loss. Of course, having the majestic Dome wilderness burn would be a terrible loss as well.

Jun 28th - 17:00pm | Reality Experim...

Mr. Rich S: "I see where this is going. If you can dismiss a credible scientific theory for the sake of a political agenda, I have nothing more to say to you."  That political agenda works both ways so I like to think I'm in that middle ground that is suspect of this hugely pop culture atmosphere.  There's an element out there that profits greatly by selective alarmist information.

Can, And Should, The Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park Be Restored?

Jun 29th - 23:30pm | Robert Hanna

One of the win-win proposals would be to store the water downstream at the already existing Don Pedro Reservoir (which would only raise the reservoir by around another thirty feet). To read more details, visit the Restore Hetch Hetchy website at: www.RestoreHetchHetchy.org

Jun 29th - 23:26pm | Robert Hanna

You're absolutely spot on, Lee. This would indeed be an international classroom for all to witness the re-birth of an irreplaceable eco-system. The NPS will begin removing the dam in the Elwha Valley in the next few months, which will be the largest dam removal ever in the US.

Anonymous: Let's face the fact's however, San Francisco must be the one's to make this move, because the current congress will certainly not approve the cost of the project, as it probably wouldn't even approve a project that would buy themselves new pencils.

Jun 29th - 21:47pm | Robert Hanna

I applaud your support for the restoration of the Hetch Hetchy Valley and will work to see that our children, grandchildren, and all future generations are able to experience the glorious valley.  Kindest regards, Robert Hannawww.GoRangeofLight.com

Jun 29th - 19:22pm | Anonymous

I think it is extremely worth the cost. I want my grand children to be able to experience what John Muir did when he arrived into Hetch Hetchy. Yes, it will certainly take a while for the valley to return to it's past majesty, but once it is returned, people will be able to take in the beauty of this great valley, and see first hand how the effort put in by Restore Hetch Hetchy paid off.

I live so close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, which has great art in all its visitor center. The Folk Art Center, outside Asheville, is the premier place to get wonderful, authentic crafts. All the submissions are juried and it is a great honor to show your work there. Further north, Moses Cone Memorial Park has the same type of quality crafts.
