Mystery Photo 42 Revealed: The Rest of The Profile

It doesn't fly, but the object of this week's Mystery Photo can help you tell which way the wind is blowing.

The answer, of course, is a a "GeoKinetics" wind vane that will tell you which way the wind is blowing when you're standing in front of the main Visitor Center at Joshua Tree National Park.

Congratulations to Ken Unger and Eric Nelson for supplying the correct answer. Both are eligible for our monthly prize drawing.

The steel sculpture is the work of Steven L. Rieman. It can take more than a gentle breeze to move it, as each "arm" weighs 800 pounds! The mast is 12 feet tall, and when the arms are fully extended, they measure 20 feet from tip-to-tip.

Whew.  So I was not hallucinating.  Joshua Tree!  Of course.  I really enjoyed sitting in the shade there last spring and watching those things in the breeze.

Don't have to worry about hallucinations, but now I have to worry about memory or whatever you call it.
