Birding In The National Parks: Cape Cod National Seashore's A Bird Magnet

There are worse places to be on a late summer or early fall weekend than Cape Cod, especially if you’re after birds. The entire peninsula from Cuttyhunk Island to Monomoy and up the outer cape through Cape Cod National Seashore is a shorebird haven as well as a migrant trap for songbirds headed south down the Atlantic Coast. The waters off the cape aren’t too shabby for birding either, with seabirds galore to be had on pelagic birding trips.

A Champagne-doused celebration of an ultra-marathoner's record run up the Appalachian National Scenic Trail that finished atop Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park in Maine didn't set well with Jensen Bissell, the state park's director. He has suggested moving the trail out of the park, in part because of growing crowds of hikers and their celebrations.

President Calls On Congress To Bolster National Park Service In Time For Its Centennial

An Obama administration legislative proposal to bolster the National Park Service in its centennial year calls on Congress to better fund the agency and also seeks higher camping and lodging fees, as well as a significant increase in the cost of a lifetime senior pass, to raise revenues that could only be spent in the National Park System if matched on a "1-to-1 basis by nonfederal donations..."
