Grand Canyon National Park Trying To Cull North Rim Bison

More than a century after Buffalo Jones' experiment with cattle and bison created some odd-looking animals that eventually found their way onto the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, the park staff is working to reduce the number in the herd. Jones was hoping to cross the two species to create a hardier animal that could withstand the cold and snow winters of the Plains, but it never really worked.

Grand Canyon National Park Initiates Water Conservation Measures

Grand Canyon National Park is initiating water conservation measures on the North and South Rims due to a water pipeline break that occurred on August 29 on a section of the pipeline north of Phantom Ranch, along the North Kaibab trail. Until park staff repairs the break, the park will remain in conservation mode.

The Grand Canyon: Between River And Rim

An estimated six million people visit the Grand Canyon annually. Most visitors look in from the South Rim or through the window of a helicopter, and roughly 26,000 float the Colorado River through all or part of the canyon. Very few in the recorded history of Grand Canyon exploration have walked its length (fewer than have walked on the moon, Kevin Fedarko tells photographer Pete McBride). Likely no one with the photographic skills of National Geographic photographer McBride have made this arduous journey, which covered 750 miles from Lees Ferry to the Grand Wash Cliffs at the canyon’s western end.
