2020 Year In Review: Parks, A Pandemic, And Photography

Despite 2020’s coronavirus pandemic causing cancellation of a number of park photo trips, Traveler’s Rebecca Latson still managed to visit several of the National Park System’s units in a safe, distanced manner. Over the year, Rebecca shared tips, techniques, and favorite places to photograph as well as how to stay safe and healthy while doing so. Here’s a look back at her articles and photos.

Tomorrow's Leaders Concerned About Climate Change At North Cascades

Residential Environmental Learning Centers across the country introduce youth to national parks and the nature they hold, and give them the opportunity to better understand the issues that confront the environment. While the coronavirus pandemic postponed many active programs this year, at North Cascades Institute staff thought outside the box to keep youth in their leadership program connected with those issues.

Working For The Parks

As nice as it might be, the federal government does not fully fund all the needs and challenges the National Park Service faces. And that's where friends groups, cooperating associations, and even for-profit businesses come into play. Some of those organizations even help National Parks Traveler bring news and features about the park system to these pages every day of the year.

Declines In Whitebark Pine Could Prompt Declines Of Clark's Nutcracker In Parks

Clark's Nutcrackers are ubiquitous to many Western national parks. When you set up camp in the backcountry they are quick to arrive, and they're not shy about begging for a treat or even stealing one. But they could vanish from some of those park settings if whitebark pines vanish, according to new research. And without the birds, new stands of whitebark pine might never get planted.

National Parks Traveler Episode 75: North Cascades Institute's Park Connections

Nature is an incredibly powerful and successful teacher. Of course, students need teachers to deliver the lessons. That’s where Residential Environmental Learning Centers come into play in national parks.

Organizations like NatureBridge, the Cuyahoga Valley Institute, the Yellowstone Institute, the Great Smoky Mountains Institute. And the North Cascades Institute. These nonprofit organizations use national parks as their classrooms.
