June 23rd and 24th, 2012, the Gaines' Mill Battlefield will be the site of an extensive program of living history based on the 150th anniversary of this pivotal battle in the Seven Days battles of 1862. The battle was Lee's first victory after taking command and represents one of the largest assaults of the war.
The weekend events are an excellent example of the depth of Richmond area Civil War programming, which will include exhibits, demonstrations of life and activities in camp and on the battlefield as well as infantry, artillery and cavalry demonstrations. The weekend will also will feature Reconnaissance from Above: Balloons in the Civil War, a demonstration of the use of balloons during the summer of 1862. For more on the Gaines' Mill events and those contiuing into July, 2012, read this article.
The Civil War Trust is currently embarked on a campaign to buy nearly 300 acres of the battlefield, greatly expanding the protected part of this historic site. Photo by Randy Johnson
