Little Tin Soldiers -- the Mighty Massachusetts 54th

photo of the week for Saturday, 2009, June 6
Photographer: Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Augustus Saint-Gaudens created the Shaw Memorial to honor Robert Gould Shaw and the African-American soldiers -- the Massachusetts 54th Regiment -- he trained and led into battle for the Union during the Civil War.

At the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site you can learn about the sculptor considered to be one of America's greatest. More than 100 of his artworks can be seen in the galleries, from heroic public monuments to expressive portrait reliefs, and the gold coins that changed the look of American coinage.

Visit the site during the summer and you can enjoy concerts, explore nature trails, or indulge your hidden talents during a sculpture class.
