| 08/10/2009 - 12:41pm | Traveler's Checklist: Canyonlands National Park | At least one company offers a multi-day mountain bike trip through the Maze (http://www.bikeraft.com/expeditions/trips/biking/maze/the_trip.php3) and there are other multi-sport trips as well (http://www.escapeadventures.com/tours/multi_sport_tours/ut_maze_cataract_canyon.htm). |
| 08/06/2009 - 3:27pm | Interior Department Releases Study That Tracks Decline Of Glaciers in Alaska and Washington State | I believe glaciers on Mount Shasta in northern California are growing as well. I seem to recall that the warming Pacific of recent winters is responsible, as it produced some prodigious snowstorms on Shasta and other coastal ranges. |
| 08/03/2009 - 3:28pm | Ever Consider "Adopting" A Cove at Lake Mead National Recreation Area | Kudos to you and your group, Jimhiker. Back when I was a Boy Scout we did a similar cleanup at a provincial park in Ontario. Seems like there's not enough good guys around to handle the clean up these days. |
| 08/01/2009 - 3:27pm | Scientists: Climate Change Seems Responsible for A Loss of Large-Diameter Trees in Yosemite National Park | Frank, not sure where you're getting your data, but here's some news from NOAA:
The world’s ocean surface temperature was the warmest on record for June, breaking the previous high mark set in 2005, according to a preliminary analysis by NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. Additionally, the ... |
| 08/01/2009 - 12:37pm | Scientists: Climate Change Seems Responsible for A Loss of Large-Diameter Trees in Yosemite National Park | Frank, I think you enjoy being a contrarian. Google the study in question, under the "news" category, and see what you come up with. In other stories the scientists spoke specifically of climate change as a driver in what's going on. Do they say that it's solely responsible? No. It's ... |
| 08/01/2009 - 8:39am | Traveler's Top Overlooks In the National Park System | Good additions, Kirby. I thought about Hurricane Ridge. Definitely a great place to get the lay of the land. |
| 07/31/2009 - 4:34pm | How To Avoid A Bear Attack in the Great Outdoors, The Cartoon | Maybe so, Fred, but I'm not sure I'd want to get close enough to a bear -- black, brown, grizzly, or polar -- to smack it on the nose! |
| 07/31/2009 - 9:35am | Dinosaur National Monument Releases Renderings of New Visitor Center, Quarry Exhibit Hall | Thanks for the correction, Heather. So noted. |
| 07/30/2009 - 6:39pm | Tour Company Wants to Offer Helicopter Overflights of Crater Lake National Park, But Likely Won't See A Decision Soon | Frank and Anonymous, Did you guys miss the memo on condescension? Beyond that, Frank, I'd disagree with your perception of Xanterra as a government-granted monopoly. As your own source notes, such a monopoly is created when "a government grants exclusive privilege to a private individual or firm to be the ... |
| 07/29/2009 - 1:01pm | First Greenpeace, Now Motorcyclists Drawing A Bead On Mount Rushmore National Memorial | OK, folks, this is the point where the moderator wades in to say that the give and take is indeed getting a bit out of control. As the saying goes, "it's not what you say, but how you say it." There are some good, and certainly diverse, viewpoints being expressed. ... |
| 07/28/2009 - 3:47pm | Jon Jarvis Questioned During His Confirmation Hearing On Snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park | Of course the senator's going to want a snowmobile-friendly NPS director. That's not surprising. To his credit, though, Sen. Barrasso did push through legislation to block oil and gas leasing on 1.2 million acres of the Wyoming Range in southwestern Wyoming. That said, there was a Newsweek column a week ... |
| 07/28/2009 - 9:45am | Greenpeace Activists Face Slew of Charges For Their Stunt At Mount Rushmore National Memorial | Frank, Aren't you out of red herring cards yet?;-) I'd disagree that my question was a red herring. You are condemning the actions of one society for its treatment of another. And yet, the Lakota have their own history of warring with their neighbors. Plus, as Skihde put it, "who ... |
| 07/27/2009 - 8:20pm | Greenpeace Activists Face Slew of Charges For Their Stunt At Mount Rushmore National Memorial | Frank and Kevin, this is not to condone 19th century U.S. conquest in the West, but does your disdain for the way Anglo-Americans treated Native Americans also apply to how Native Americans treated others? The Lakota (Sioux), living on the North Central Plains, considered all Indians that did not belong ... |
| 07/27/2009 - 9:46am | Visitation to National Parks Is On the Upswing, Entrance-Fee-Free Weekends Partly to Blame | Mike, Thanks for your note. I'm well-familiar with the site you mentioned, though it doesn't track specific dates so wouldn't help with judging the successes, or failures, of the entrance-fee-free weekends. Beyond that, you hit on one of the problems: Each park has its own method for recording stats. Tracking ... |
| 07/25/2009 - 10:43am | Visitation to National Parks Is On the Upswing, Entrance-Fee-Free Weekends Partly to Blame | Jim, I've heard anecdotally that passengers on river trips on the Snake in Grand Teton are down this summer. As for tracking visitation, my guess is that it's not a pretty science at all. Are all entrance gates staffed 24/7? Do those at the stations count all heads in vehicles? ... |
| 07/24/2009 - 3:39pm | Are Our National Parks No Longer for the People? | Umm, no videos at that site, MikeD. Got another link? |
| 07/24/2009 - 6:47am | Interior Secretary Scales Back Snowmobile Use in Yellowstone National Park, Calls for More Public Comment | J.D., it's hard to believe, but I've seen data that indicate snowmobiles are more polluting during the winter season than the greater volume of cars, trucks, and motorcycles during the summer. Hard to believe, but that's what they say. And the soundscape problems from snowmobiles have been well-documented. For instance, ... |
| 07/23/2009 - 8:54pm | Update: Search Under Way For One Overdue Hiker at Grand Canyon National Park | AZ Hiker, thanks for the first-hand information. Definitely sounds like a foreboding journey early on. |
| 07/23/2009 - 8:06am | Are Our National Parks No Longer for the People? | >>those who file lawsuits to get people out of the parks are the ENEMY and all those who enjoy steeping a foot, wheel, ski, raft, etc... in a park need to band together and insure we have access to these wonderful areas. We can deal with how and what we ... |
| 07/22/2009 - 10:46am | Reader Participation Day: What's Your Favorite National Park, and Why? | Dang, Kirby, I hate when I screw up. But I gotta admit, Gros Morne sure looks pretty. If it wasn't so far from Utah, I'd put my canoe atop my rig and head there! |
| 07/20/2009 - 9:50am | Eradicating Everglades Pythons Will be a Formidable Task | Anonymous No. 1, can't say I ever recall anyone offering video footage of a 50-foot python, but we wouldn't intentionally delete that. Heck, that'd draw traffic in herds! Now, if we could root out that Stalinesque moderator, we'd feed him to that python of yours. |
| 07/19/2009 - 9:32am | Grand Teton National Park Rangers Rescue Father and Son From the Snake River After Their Raft Springs a Leak | Actually, the location is not that remote when it comes to cell coverage. Jackson, and cell towers, are a short distance away. |
| 07/16/2009 - 12:20pm | Mystery Photo 12: And What Room Might This Be? | I told Bob you wouldn't take kindly to his comment....;-) That said, darn good memory, Djjeffrey100. To have visited two years ago and nail it right down to which launch control center was depicted is pretty impressive! |
| 07/16/2009 - 8:10am | Mystery Photo 12: And What Room Might This Be? | Methinks this was an inside job, Bob. Could Djjeffrey100 have been, or currently is, a missileer? |
| 07/14/2009 - 1:44pm | History and Scenery in One Great Package – and Getting There is Part of the Fun | Liz, according to the NPS and the Sitka web site, the park is 113 acres. Do you have a source for the 13 acres? I can't imagine the Park Service being 100 acres off...though stranger things happen out there;-) |
| 07/14/2009 - 12:06pm | Thelma & Louise Redux? Man Drives Car Off South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park | Toldes, ssshhhhhhhhhhh!;-) Another great state park in Utah is Snow Canyon, to the southwest of Zion. Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous. |
| 07/13/2009 - 6:33pm | Grand Teton National Park Rangers Resort to Short-Haul Method to Rescue Injured Climber | Thanks for the update, Tom. Hopefully he's on the way to a full recovery. |
| 07/13/2009 - 5:20pm | Thelma & Louise Redux? Man Drives Car Off South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park | Captain, folks at the park tell me that the driver somehow found a spot without the short wall, so no damage there. |
| 07/13/2009 - 12:04pm | Traveler's Top 10 Rivers to Ride in the National Park System | Reinharden, you're definitely right about the Middle Fork being a fabulous river. But, alas, it's not in the National Park System, which is the area this post focused on. Now, if the Forest Service wouldn't mind swapping that section of the forest to the NPS, we'll definitely add it in ... |
| 07/12/2009 - 4:49pm | Wolverine Photographed in Rocky Mountain National Park | Thanks for the link to the photos, Aaron. Those are great shots, particularly in light of the elusiveness of wolverines. |
