Jen Stegmann
BiographyMy favored life involves hiking and looking for elusive wildflowers in the Rockies. Spending nights in some small little cabin way back in the woods. And maybe writing about my journeys and experiences.
My real life (the one that may or may not pay the bills) currently involves pursuing a Ph.D. in Natural Resources, with an emphasis in Human Dimensions, at Colorado State University. I've worked on a couple of smaller research projects around Colorado, but my dissertation work centers around recreation and visitors to public lands (BLM-managed, mostly) in Alaska. I love Alaska!

- 3/04/2008 1:03 pm - Would a Change in Gun Laws Be a Threat to National Park Bears? : I really like what Wildvisions had to say... I spent much of last summer out in the interior of Alaska. And sadly (from my perspective), the only place I saw a brown bear was inside Denali National Park. But I spent three months at various locations around the Alaska range, ...
- 2/22/2008 10:39 pm - Dinosaur National Monument Cutting Paleontology Staff : This comment is not to cause any more flares. I hope Kurt will forgive my intrusion; I'm not sure how else to do this. Tom and Paleogirl1, look through my profile on here and find my blog/website link - then find my contact info and send me a note. Jen ...
- 2/21/2008 10:09 pm - Dinosaur National Monument Cutting Paleontology Staff : First, this seems like such a political decision. I wonder if those in charge at DNM are only 'in it' for themselves... Hmmmm..... Second, I need to admit it, I found Tom's rant refreshing. I myself am a graduate student in natural resources, and while my first love(s) involve the ...
- 2/15/2008 1:35 pm - National Park Visitation Debate -- Here We Go Again : Steve, I'd be interested in reading the whole report, too, if you can find it (or a link). "To defrauded town toilers, parks in magazine articles are like pictures of bread to the hungry. I can write only hints to incite good wanderers to come to the feast.... A day ...
- 12/04/2007 3:55 pm - Grand Teton Puts Down Another Bear : Melissa, I too want to thank and congratulate you! Stick with it. My experience is a bit varied. And I've never been a ranger - I'm on the research side of things (and of course, a visitor to many national parks). But my experience this summer - note, I was ...
- 11/26/2007 2:33 pm - Conservation Groups Will Head to Court Over Yellowstone Snowmobile Decision : Anon - I hate to tell you this, but only one of my four grandparents lived that long. The one grandfather who smoked (none of the rest smoked or drank) died in his early 60's. You know why my other grandpa lived so long? Because his body was in much ...
- 11/18/2007 10:26 pm - Does Hiking Yosemite National Park's Half Dome Still Present a Wilderness Experience? : I agree with much of what has been said here. And truthfully, on a personal level, I do question many management decisions of the NPS. However, a big problem we face, more than NPS management, is the expectations of visitors . Too many people just want to see animals from ...
- 11/08/2007 12:58 pm - Trekking to Dick Proenneke's Cabin in Lake Clark National Park : I spent this past summer in Alaska. Although I never made it to Proenneke's cabin, I read his books and was SO inspired!
